The School of Mathematics and Physics
The School of Mathematics and Physics maintains a strong international reputation for cutting-edge research and innovative teaching. Our research strengths include: Algebra and Combinatorics; Geometric and Non-linear Analysis; Mathematical Modelling; Mathematical Physics; Probability and Statistics; Astrophysics; Biophotonics and Laser Science; Condensed Matter Physics; Quantum Atom-Optics; Quantum Computation; and Quantum Information Science.
The School of Mathematics and Physics is committed to providing students with the highest quality teaching and learning standards through dedicated and award-winning lecturers, as well as through access to the latest research and world-class resources.
The role
The successful appointees will work within the Tensor Network Algorithms group led by Dr Ian McCulloch. The research group works in computational tensor network algorithms for one- and two-dimensional quantum systems, and applications to condensed matter, ultra-cold atomic gases and engineered quantum systems. The current focus of the group is DMRG and MPS algorithms for infinite 1D systems, applications of MPS to physically relevant simulations (especially non-equilibrium), groundstates and time evolution in 2D PEPS, fermionic tensor networks. The group has ties to experimental groups at The University of Queensland and other institutions. While all applicants interested in these and related areas will be considered, it is anticipated that one fellowship will be aimed at work on new algorithms and techniques for tensor networks, while the second fellowship will focus on applying existing software and tools to applications relevant to experimental groups at The University of Queensland and the Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems.
The person
Applicants should possess a PhD in the area of quantum science. Successful applicants will be able to work collaboratively with collegues and have a high level of inter-personal skills. The first fellowship, working on tensor networks and algorithm development, will require a person with a strong background in computational methods.
The second fellowship will be appointed to a candidate able to interact with experimental groups at The University of Queensland and the Centre for Engineered Quantum Systems working on, for example, BEC, micromechanical oscillators, circuit QED, topological states in 1D and 2D, etc. Many of the computational tools are provided by existing software, and as such for the second fellowship computer programming experience will be useful but not essential.
Remuneration
This is a fixed term 2 year, at Research Academic Level A or Level B (depending on experience, skills and qualifications).
The remuneration package for Level A will be in the range $70,676.68 - $75,876.70 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $82,691.72 - $88,775.74 p.a.).
The remuneration package for Level B will be in the range $79,861.17 - $85,850.63 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $93,437.57 - $100,445.24 p.a).
